Flat-Pack Bed Assembly: Tips for a Stress-Free Build

By the Kinky Beds teamPublished 2 min read

Quick answer

  • Clear the room, unpack everything and check the parts list before you start.
  • Build with two people, in the room where the bed will live.
  • Hand-tighten everything first, square the frame, then tighten fully.
  • Re-tighten bolts after a week or two as the timber settles.

Building a bed together can be a satisfying first project in a newly made-over room, or a test of patience. These tips keep it firmly in the first category.

Before you start

  • Build in the bedroom. A built frame may not fit through the door.
  • Clear the floor and lay down the cardboard packaging or a blanket to protect parts and flooring.
  • Unpack everything and lay parts out in groups. Check them against the parts list.
  • Read the instructions all the way through once before picking up a tool.
  • Allow time. Don't start at 10pm.

Tools

Most flat-pack beds come with the Allen keys you need. A cordless screwdriver on a low setting speeds things up, but finish tightening by hand so you don't strip threads or crack timber. The Sovereign Bed comes with full instructions and needs no specialist tools; most couples finish in under two hours.

A sensible build order

Typical bed assembly order
Step What happens Tip
1 Attach side rails to headboard Hand-tighten only
2 Attach the foot end Hand-tighten only
3 Fit any centre rail and legs Check legs touch the floor
4 Square the frame Measure both diagonals: they should match
5 Tighten all bolts fully Work in a criss-cross pattern
6 Fit the slats Make sure each one sits in its holder
7 Fit any decorative parts On The Sovereign Bed, the panels swap in with no tools
8 Add the mattress Check it sits flat and within the side rails

Common mistakes

  • Over-tightening early. It pulls the frame out of square. Tighten once everything is in place.
  • Skipping washers. They spread the load and stop bolts loosening.
  • Mixing up similar parts. Group them and label with masking tape.
  • Forgetting the centre support on larger beds.
  • Throwing away the instructions. Keep them with the warranty details.

After a week or two

Timber settles and joints bed in, so go round and re-tighten every bolt after the first week or two, then every few months. This is the single best way to prevent creaks. See how to stop a bed creaking.

Disposing of the packaging

Flatten the cardboard for recycling. Plain, unmarked packaging (which is how The Sovereign Bed arrives) means there's nothing revealing in the recycling bin either. More in discreet delivery explained.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to assemble a bed frame?

It depends on the design. Most couples assemble The Sovereign Bed in under two hours, with no specialist tools.

Can one person assemble a bed?

Some beds can be built alone, but two people make it far easier and safer, especially when holding the headboard and rails in place.

Why does my new bed wobble?

Usually because the bolts were tightened before the frame was square, or need re-tightening after settling. Loosen slightly, square the frame, then tighten in a criss-cross pattern.
