A Bedroom Makeover for Couples: Ideas and a Plan

By the Kinky Beds teamPublished 3 min read

Quick answer

  • Start by agreeing what the room is for and how each of you wants it to feel.
  • The bed is the centrepiece: get the size and style right first.
  • Lighting, textiles and storage do most of the transformation for the least money.
  • Plan it in phases so the room is never out of action for long.

A shared bedroom has to work for two people: two sets of habits, two sleep styles and often two very different ideas of "cosy". A makeover is a great chance to design a room that feels like yours rather than yours-and-mine. Here's how to plan one together.

Step 1: agree the brief

Sit down with a cup of tea and answer these together:

  • What's the room for? Sleep, of course, but also reading, relaxing, getting ready, intimacy.
  • How should it feel? Pick three words each (calm, dramatic, warm, minimal, romantic) and find the overlap.
  • What annoys you now? Clutter, cold light, a creaky bed, not enough storage, one side always cramped.
  • Budget: agree a number and a priority order.

Step 2: the bed comes first

The bed decides the layout and the style, so choose it before paint and accessories. Check the size against your room with our room-fit calculator, and read Double vs King if you're torn. A creaky or wobbly bed is a common complaint: a solid frame fixes that for good (see how to stop a bed creaking).

Step 3: layout

Centre the bed on the main wall if you can, with walkway space on both sides so neither partner has to climb over the other. Keep the route from door to bed clear. If one of you gets up earlier, give them the side nearest the door.

Step 4: colour and texture

Three couples' bedroom palettes
Mood Walls Bed and textiles Accent
Dark and dramatic Charcoal or ink blue Black frame, deep grey and oxblood bedding Brass or warm metal
Soft and romantic Warm white or plaster pink White frame, layered linen and velvet Dusky rose, candlelight
Calm and minimal Pale grey or stone Black or white frame, crisp white bedding One bold artwork

Step 5: lighting

Swap a single ceiling light for layers: dimmable ceiling light, two bedside lamps (one each, with separate switches) and a warm accent light. It's one of the cheapest ways to make a room feel completely different. More ideas in discreet bedroom design ideas.

Step 6: storage

Two people means double the stuff. Give each partner their own bedside drawer and wardrobe space, plus a shared lidded box or ottoman for throws, cushions and anything private.

Make it yours

The finishing touches are what make a room feel like a couple's room: a print you chose together, photos, a scent you both like. And if you'd like your new bed to hold a secret or two, The Sovereign Bed keeps its restraint rings hidden behind decorative panels until you want them.

Frequently asked questions

How do you design a bedroom for a couple?

Agree a brief first (how the room should feel and what it's for), choose the bed size and style, give each person their own bedside space and storage, and use layered, dimmable lighting.

What is the best bed size for a couple?

A Double (135 × 190 cm mattress) works for many couples; a King (150 × 200 cm) gives each sleeper more width and 10 cm more length. Check your room size first.

How can we make our bedroom feel more romantic?

Warm, dimmable lighting, rich textures like velvet and linen, a clutter-free space and a few personal touches make the biggest difference.
