Choosing a Bed for a Small Bedroom

By the Kinky Beds teamPublished 2 min read

Quick answer

  • In most small UK bedrooms, a Double (135 × 190 cm mattress) is the sweet spot for couples.
  • Aim for at least 45–60 cm of walkway; less than that feels cramped every day.
  • Centre the bed if you can, keep the floor clear, and use vertical and closed storage.

Many UK homes have compact bedrooms, especially new builds and flats. The right bed and layout can make even a small room feel calm and generous.

What counts as a small bedroom?

There's no official definition, but a double bedroom of around 3 × 3 m or less will feel tight with a large bed. Box rooms and smaller doubles need even more careful planning.

Pick the right size

Bed size for room size (rough guide, mattress only)
Room (approx.) Comfortable for Tight but possible
Under 2.6 m wide Small double Double, against one wall
2.6–3 m wide Double King with narrow walkways
Over 3 m wide King Super king

These use mattress widths; frames add extra. Always check with real frame dimensions. Our room-fit calculator shows your room to scale with a Double and a King.

Layout ideas

  • Centre the bed on the longest uninterrupted wall so both partners can get in and out.
  • Keep the door swing clear and the route from door to bed open.
  • Under the window works if there's no radiator in the way and curtains can still close.
  • Against a side wall saves floor space for one sleeper, but one partner has to climb over the other, which gets old quickly.

Make it feel bigger

  • Wall-mounted bedside shelves or slim tables instead of bulky cabinets.
  • Tall wardrobes rather than wide chests of drawers.
  • A large mirror opposite the window to bounce light.
  • A consistent colour scheme: walls, bed and curtains in related tones.
  • Keep the floor clear. A bed that looks light and clean-lined helps.

Small room, private room

Small bedrooms are often closer to other rooms, so privacy matters. Soft furnishings help with sound, and closed storage keeps things tidy. A bed with hidden restraints is useful here because there's nothing to store or set up; see how hidden restraints work.

Frequently asked questions

What size bed is best for a small double bedroom?

For a couple, a Double (135 × 190 cm mattress) is usually the best balance of sleeping space and floor space in a small room.

Can a king size bed fit in a small bedroom?

Sometimes, but walkways may be very narrow. Check with the frame's real dimensions and aim for at least 45–60 cm of space on each side you use.

Where should a bed go in a small bedroom?

Ideally centred on the longest clear wall, so both sides are accessible, with the route from the door kept open.
