Cleaning and Caring for Restraints
By the Kinky Beds teamPublished 3 min read
Quick answer
- Always follow the maker's care label first.
- Leather: wipe with a barely damp cloth and mild soap, air dry away from heat, condition occasionally. Never soak it.
- Neoprene and nylon: hand wash in warm soapy water, rinse, air dry.
- Dry everything fully before storing, in a breathable bag away from sunlight.
Restraints last much longer, and stay much nicer to use, when they're cleaned after use and stored properly. Here's a material-by-material routine.
The quick routine after every use
- Check for marks, fraying or damaged stitching.
- Wipe or wash according to the material (below).
- Dry completely, away from radiators and direct sun.
- Store in a breathable bag or lidded box.
Cleaning by material
| Material | Clean with | Avoid | Drying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Genuine leather | A barely damp cloth and a little mild, unscented soap or leather cleaner | Soaking, washing machines, alcohol, harsh sprays | Air dry flat at room temperature |
| Faux leather | Mild soap and water on a soft cloth | Solvents and abrasive pads | Wipe dry, then air dry |
| Neoprene | Hand wash in warm water with mild detergent | Hot washes, tumble drying | Air dry, turned inside out |
| Nylon webbing | Hand wash or a gentle machine wash in a laundry bag (check the label) | Bleach, fabric softener | Air dry |
| Cotton rope | Hand wash in a mesh bag; some can be machine washed | Hot tumble drying | Hang loosely coiled to dry |
| Hemp and jute rope | Spot clean only; most shouldn't be soaked | Washing machines | Air dry under light tension |
| Metal hardware | Wipe with a damp cloth, dry immediately | Leaving wet (rust), harsh abrasives | Dry with a towel |
Leather: a little more care
Leather is a natural material that dries out over time. Every few months (or when it starts to look dry), rub in a small amount of leather conditioner with a soft cloth, leave it to absorb, then buff off. This keeps it supple and stops cracking around buckles and stitching. If leather gets wet, let it dry slowly at room temperature; heat makes it stiff and brittle.
Hygiene and sharing
Restraints that touch only wrists and ankles need normal cleaning, not sterilising. Use mild products: strong disinfectants and alcohol can damage leather and irritate skin. If anything is used by more than one person, clean it between uses. Sealed intimate items are best kept sealed until you're ready to use them.
Inspect before you use
Before each use, check:
- Stitching around rings and buckles: any loose threads are a reason to replace.
- Buckles and clips: they should open and close smoothly.
- Velcro: if it no longer grips firmly, it may release unexpectedly.
- Rope: fraying, stiffness or flat spots mean it's time for a new length.
Storage
Keep restraints in a breathable cotton bag or a lidded box, out of direct sunlight, with leather and rope kept dry. Separate metal hardware from leather so it can't scratch or mark it. For ideas on keeping everything private, see storing intimate accessories discreetly.
Caring for a restraint bed
A bed frame with integrated restraints needs the same care as any good bed: dust it, re-tighten bolts every few months, and keep panels and fittings clean with a soft, slightly damp cloth. On The Sovereign Bed the decorative panels swap in under 60 seconds with no tools, which also makes the restraint rings easy to reach for a wipe.
